The Pros

Here are a few reasons why Teachable is an excellent option for anyone wanting to create and sell online courses:

  • It’s Easy to Set Up & Use

    Teachable’s intuitive admin area and menu system make it one of the best online course platforms in terms of ease of use.

    Everything has been designed to be as user-friendly as possible, drastically cutting the learning curve between signing up and selling your first course.

    In the unlikely event that you get stuck, the Teachable support pages offer detailed step-by-step instructions on everything to help you create online courses, build dedicated sales pages, modify your school’s appearance, manage integrations such as Google Analytics, and much, much more.

  • Teachable Includes Awesome Features to Help Boost Sales

    Want help to make as many sales as possible? Of course you do!

    Depending on which Teachable plan you choose, you can take advantage of certain features to help you boost sales, including:

  • A Built-In Affiliate Program – Available on all paid plans, this allows you to add affiliates to your school (people who will promote your course on your behalf), with a percentage of the revenue given to an affiliate when their promotion results in a sale.
  • Upsell Offers – All plans include functionality to customize post-purchase thank you pages with upsell offers, providing an opportunity for a customer to purchase any other Teachable online courses that you have available.
  • Coupons – Available on all paid plans, this allows you to create either multi-use coupons (e.g., for a generic 10% off offer available to anyone) or single-use coupons (e.g., as a reward for a specific customer) to help incentivize people to purchase your courses.
  • Marketing Integrations – All paid plans include functionality to integrate directly with MailChimp and ConvertKit to help you market your courses to drive sales. You also have the option of emailing students directly from your school, for example, to make them aware of offers on other Teachable online courses that you have available.
  • It’s Easy to Customize

    Customizing your Teachable online courses, or school as a whole, couldn’t be simpler. For example, you can:

  • Add Custom Branding – You can quickly change a variety of things in your school, for example, the logo, background, font, or aligning your theme’s colors with that of your brand.
  • Use a Custom Domain – Available on Basic plans up; this allows Teachable online schools to use a custom .com domain.
  • Add Custom Text – Not happy with some of the default text that appears in your school’s pages? Not a problem. You’re free to add custom text in a variety of locations, for example, your course’s header, footer, checkout page, error pages, and within the course content itself to name just a few.
  • Perform Advanced Customization – Professional and Business plans come with access to the Power Editor, which allows you to edit the template files using Liquid to create entirely custom, bespoke Teachable courses.

  • Teachable Supports All Popular Types of Content

    It’s usually a good idea to add some form of multimedia to your lectures to help keep students engaged, and also to help students who prefer to learn in ways other than just reading text.

    Teachable allows you to uploaded content in any file type to accomplish this, with there being four main types that you can embed directly with your courses (images, audio, video, and PDF).

    It couldn’t be simpler to add different content types either, as you can choose to upload files from your computer, directly via a URL, or from external applications such as Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive.

  • It Allows You to Drip Content

    With Teachable, you can choose to deliver content in two main ways:

  1. All at once, meaning a student can view all of the material immediately once they’ve purchased one of your courses, and this option is available on all plans.
  1. Or, any of the paid plans, you can take advantage of the ability to drip content to your students. This excellent feature allows you to release lectures on a specific date or after a particular amount of time (e.g., seven days after purchase), and it can help keep your students engaged over a longer period.
  • You Get Access to Awesome Support & Extensive Documentation

    Teachable Support should be your go-to destination in the unlikely event that you get stuck with anything while setting up your school, creating a class, or selling your courses.

    You’ll find in-depth, step-by-step instructions with helpful images and videos to help solve any problems or issues you may be experiencing, with this feature contributing to the many positive Teachable reviews that have been provided by happy customers.

    Email support is also available on all plans (both free and paid), and Professional/Business plans get access to live chat to allow Teachable Support to assist you as quickly as possible.

Teachable is one of the best online course platforms in terms of the support available. This image shows a portion of the documentation available to help Techable users.
  • There Are No Complex Hosting Requirements

    All hosting requirements for your online school are handled directly by Teachable.com, meaning you don’t need to use external hosting for any of your school’s content, including your lectures and multimedia (you receive unlimited hosting and unlimited video bandwidth on all free and paid plans, as well as an unlimited number of schools through your one account via myTeachable).

    This saves you a lot of hassle in terms of finding a host, connecting that host to Teachable.com, checking out much storage you have available on a regular basis, and worrying about the security and uptime of your hosting to ensure your online courses are safe, secure, and always accessible.

    Teachable removes a lot of headaches in this respect.

The Cons

Here are a few of the things that I am not so keen on:

  • No Instant Payouts on Lower Plans (Monthly Payouts Instead)

    One minor gripe is that you don’t get access to instant payouts unless you choose Teachable’s top-tier plans (Professional/Business).

    If you select the Teachable free plan or basic plan, you’ll need to make do with monthly payouts instead.

    Cashflow is the lifeblood of any small business, so it’s a pity that a jump in monthly fee from $39 to $99 is needed to access this feature.

  • Relatively High Transaction Fees on Lower Plans

    While I understand the high transaction fees associated with the Teachable free plan (the company needs to cover the cost of marketing, hosting, and customer support by some means given that there isn’t a monthly fee for this plan), the 5% transaction fee on the Basic plan could be considered high given that you’re already paying $39 a month.

    It can be difficult to justify the Basic plan because as shown here, it can work out more cost-effective to choose the Professional plan as the lack of transaction fees can offset the higher monthly cost, leaving you better off financially.

    (The transaction fees charged by Teachable are pretty standard, though, as there is a minimal difference between the fees charged by the online course development platform offered by Thinkific vs Teachable’s fee structure).

  • No Direct Webinar Functionality (You Can Still Host These Indirectly, However)

    The effectiveness of webinars can’t be understated, as they’re a great way to boost engagement by offering a more interactive way for your students to learn.

    Unfortunately, Teachable doesn’t provide a way to hold webinars directly from your online school. Instead, you can host these indirectly by embedding a third-party stream within your lecture area, for example from YouTube, Twitch.tv, Adobe Connect, LiveStream, and Ustream.

    This isn’t a huge criticism, as you can still hold webinars to the benefit of your online school within Teachable. It just takes a bit more work versus if a direct Teachable feature offered this capability.

Teachable Pricing & Plan Features

There is a free plan and three paid plans available.

Before discussing the various differences and pricing of each, it’s worth covering the standard functionality that you get for all Teachable courses regardless of which plan you choose:

Image showing the standard functionality available on all Teachable com plans

Another feature that isn’t listed above is that you can create an unlimited number of schools (on all of the membership plans) through the myTeachable interface.

The various differences between the four plans are as follows:

Teachable Free Plan

  • Aimed at complete beginners who want to explore the platform, and people who are primarily interested in how to create an online course for free or who are looking create very basic web courses.
  • $0 per month membership fee, but paid course sales have a transaction fee per sale of $1 PLUS 10% of revenue (so, for example, a $99 sale would result in a transaction fee of $10.90).
  • The free plan comes with all of the standard functionality mentioned above, but there are a number of restrictions versus the paid plans:
  • You can’t add graded quizzes to test a student’s understanding;
  • You’re unable to use a custom domain name for your Teachable school;
  • You can’t offer promotional coupons to customers;
  • You’re unable to create an affiliate program to boost sales;
  • You can’t use third-party integrations to add extra features/functionality;
  • You’re unable to provide course completion certificates to students;
  • You can’t use Teachable’s Power Editor to create custom designs.

Teachable Paid Plans

There are three paid plans available at Teachable.com. The pricing/features of these are as follows:

A Worked Example: How Much Does it Cost to Develop an Online Course / Sell It?

While the monthly fees are a huge factor when deciding what plan to choose, they only tell you part of the story.

There are also transaction and processing fees that you need to take into consideration, as these impact how much you can earn with your Teachable courses.

The easiest way to show the impact of these is via a worked example.

Let’s assume you’ve created a course which you sell to 15 people a month.

For this example, we’ll assume these are US-based sales, which Teachable charges payment processing fees of 2.9% of revenue and 30¢ per transaction for. Unlike plan costs and transaction fees, processing fees are the same regardless of what plan you choose.

Plan costs are taken directly from the Teachable pricing section above.

(Note: different fees apply for international sales).

Based on these factors, here are the costs and how much you’ll make for each of the plans:

 Teachable Free PlanBasic PlanProfessional PlanBusiness Plan
Total Revenue$1,485.00$1,485.00$1,485.00$1,485.00
Plan Cost$0.00$39.00$99.00$499.00
Transaction Fees$163.50$74.25$0.00$0.00
Processing Fees$47.57$47.57$47.57$47.57
Net Profit$1,273.93$1,324.18$1,338.43$986.00

Which Plan Should I Choose?

Based on the example above, and despite the obvious attractions for anyone wanting to know how to create an online course for free, it’s difficult to recommend the Teachable free plan. It’s a false economy, as the high transaction fees mean you end up earning less overall than with the Basic or Professional plan even though you’re paying no monthly fee.

The Business plan will undoubtedly appeal to only a fraction of people given the high monthly cost. The decision as to whether or not you choose the Teachable Business plan will be based on the features/functionality you want and need only (as the transaction and processing fees are the same as the Professional plan which costs $99 a month assuming payment processing occurs via PayPal/Stripe).

It is likely that you’ll need the Business plan if you want access to any of the following features (these aren’t available with any other plan):

  • Bulk importing of students, i.e., from other online course platforms;
  • Bulk enrolling of students;
  • The need for >5 people to serve as an owner/author on your online school.

I view the Professional plan as the best value for money.

Yes, it’s more expensive than the basic plan, but the additional features you get (e.g., the ability to provide course completion certificates to students; access to advanced customization options; access to advanced reports to check performance, and the fact that you can have an unbranded website) make it worth the additional money and help boost how professional Teachable courses built using this plan can look.

Would I Recommend Teachable?

100%.

Despite there being many Teachable alternatives out there (Thinkific, Kajabi, Udemy, etc.), the fact that it offers the bulk of the features you’ll ever need on such an easy-to-use platform makes it my choice versus the competition.

It isn’t a surprise that this review forms just one of the countless positive Teachable reviews posted online, as it’s the ideal solution for anyone looking to create online courses; from complete beginners with no technical knowledge to seasoned pros, Teachable will be everything you’re looking for in an online course development platform.

Thanks,

– Jonathan
