Introduction

If you've read my About page, you'll know that I've had a bit of a tricky time of it when it comes to digital marketing.

From about 2008 until 2014, I was firmly planted in the 'build it, and they will come' camp. You wouldn't have had much success trying to sway my opinion either, as I'd have probably just buried my head in the sand while continuing to make 'critical' improvements to my product or service.

That would inevitably lead to people knowing about my brand, right!?

Oh dear.

If there's one thing that best highlights up my naivety/ignorance, it's probably Beth Comstock's remark that "You can't sell anything if you can't tell anything," and I was literally telling nobody anything.

Now, before you write me and this review off completely, I've thankfully since learned the error of my ways and realized that digital marketing is more critical than ever (it just took me a lot longer than it should have!).

It’s 100% true, though.

As the internet becomes increasingly saturated with content, social media promotions, and adverts for pretty much every type of product or service imaginable, the best way to stand out is to improve your digital marketing.

Regardless of a company's size or the products or services it offers, success on the internet is entirely dependent on the effectiveness of their digital marketing. It's just that simple.

But it can be a scary prospect; I get it.

While it sounds relatively simple at first glance (I mean it's just the promotion of products and services digitally), the phrase 'digital marketing' hides a lot of unknowns and complexities.

For example, there's the risk of spending a lot of time, effort and money on something that barely moves the needle when it comes to exposure or sales for your brand. Or, the fact that the 'best practices' seem to move at 100 miles per hour, leaving you with the niggling doubt that whatever you choose may not provide results long-term.

Trust me; I've been there.

As much as I'd love to say I did, I didn't go from zero to hero immediately once I figured out that digital marketing was the way forward.

I've paid money for PPC campaigns that lead to no sales. Zero. I've tried and failed multiple times to get my websites to the top of Google, leaving me frustrated because nothing ever worked. I would have gotten more enjoyment from banging my head against the wall.

Then I came across the following quote from Dan Zarrella:

image from SEMrush review post showing a popular marketing quote

This quote sums up the next part of my marketing journey; the realization that data is a digital marketer's best friend. It sounds obvious, but none of my previous businesses, blogs or websites made enough use of reliable data or insights:

  • I’d write content that I was interested in writing, rather than topics I knew my audience would want and enjoy;
  • I spent little to no time on keyword research, meaning I wasn't targeting keywords that showed commercial intent and a good degree of profitability, or a level of difficulty that I could compete with to help me rank for these search terms;
  • And I had nothing that even remotely looked like a backlink strategy to find link opportunities that would boost my content's authority. Whatever links I did get would have very little impact.

Does any of this sound familiar? Do you feel frustrated that no matter what you try or how hard you work, nothing makes a difference? Or, perhaps you're already achieving a bit of success, but you'd like to do more to take your business to the next level?

I know from experience that it’s a two-step approach.

First, you need to realize that digital marketing is EVERYTHING when it comes to online business.

Second, and just as important, you need to find a reliable source of data to help you make smarter marketing decisions.

It's a case of switching from working hard to working smart, and that's where this review and my recommendation of SEMrush comes in.

Let’s dive in…

What Is SEMrush?

Started in 2008, SEMrush is a complete marketing toolkit that provides users with in-depth data and insights to help them make smarter marketing decisions.

The online software provides detailed data across many areas to help users in any industry improve their digital marketing campaigns, including:

  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

  • Pay-Per-Click Advertising (PPC)

  • Keyword Research

  • Competitive Analysis

  • Social Media

  • Public Relations

  • Content Marketing

  • and more.

All SEMrush plans include 28 advanced tools and features to help boost your online marketing, for example, a site audit function which checks your site's SEO health and suggests rank-boosting improvements, tools for researching keywords/backlinks/competitors' PPC advertising, and features for identifying trending content plus much, much more.

Click here to see a full breakdown of the features.

Who Is SEMrush For?

SEMrush is the tool of choice for over three million people to help them find and exploit a competitive advantage with their online marketing. The various levels of plans available give it widespread appeal.

It will be of benefit to anyone who runs a business with an internet presence that they'd like to improve the success of, from small-scale users such as small businesses, affiliate marketers or bloggers, all the way up to medium and large companies.

Tip: If you're only looking for a premium keyword research tool (and not entire digital marketing tools), you'll end up paying more per month with SEMrush for features that you probably won't use.

If keyword research is your only requirement, save yourself the money and go with SpyFu instead.

Standout Benefits of SEMrush

I've mentioned that data is a digital marketer's best friend, but that's only the case if it's reliable, timely, and relevant.

SEMrush makes the process of getting the information you need to meet these three criteria super-quick and simple, helping reduce the need for luck in your digital marketing equation.

It's the difference between someone who works hard and another person who works smart. For example:

I heard that articles about Snapchat have been doing well recently...

That's quite vague, but I guess it's worth writing an article of some kind to try and get more traffic to my website...

non-SEMrush user

vs

I've seen that two of my competitors have top-10 ranked articles on Snapchat advertising.

Using SEMrush, I know exactly what they're ranking for and the keywords they've missed, and I can see that these keywords get a good search volume each month while not being overly competitive.

I've also found some good backlink opportunities to help me rank, and I've used Topic Research to find interesting ways to expand and improve on my competitors' content to provide more value to my audience.

SEMrush user

Who would you rather be from these (albeit made up) examples?

I thought so.

It's obvious who will have a better chance of ranking their content, and that's the kind of assuredness that SEMrush's data can add to your digital marketing. Let's go beyond this basic example though to show you just how useful SEMrush can be.

Based on my experiences, here are seven of the standout benefits that you'll get from using the tool:

(click to navigate)

Benefit #1
Stop second guessing how your website is performing. Get a detailed overview of your site’s SEO health at the click of a button.
Benefit #2
Spend less time figuring out who your competition is and more time outsmarting them.
Benefit #3
Steal your competitors’ marketing secrets by taking a peek under the hood of their websites.
Benefit #4
Stop wasting time and money on unprofitable keywords.
Benefit #5
Find the best backlink opportunities to boost your website’s authority without wasting time and energy.
Benefit #6
Relax knowing that your latest content idea will be a hit before you write a single word.
Benefit #7
Avoid making expensive mistakes by seeing your competitors’ PPC ad text (find out what works with much less trial, error, and wasted money).

Standout Benefit #1

Stop second guessing how your website is performing.
Get a detailed overview of your site’s SEO health at the click of a button.

The first step to improving anything is understanding exactly where you stand.

Unfortunately, when it comes to SEO, it can sometimes be a complex beast. Not necessarily from the perspective of understanding what needs doing generally (a lot of SEO factors such as improving page speed and mobile friendliness are well known), but instead, it's knowing specifically what needs improving on your site in the first place, and being able to keep track of these improvements as you go along. This problem only grows as your site does.

Thankfully, there's an easy solution.

SEMrush makes it super-simple to complete a site audit that covers over 120 factors, allowing you to see an assessment of your site's SEO health and suggested improvements at the click of a button. Each time you correct any suggested issues and re-run the test, SEMrush tracks your progress via graphs and a revised SEO score, along with showing any persistent issues and new problems that need rectifying.

Seeing Your Site's SEO Health

Taking the confusion and uncertainty out of SEO couldn't be easier with SEMrush's Site Audit function:

Enter a domain name and click Start Audit to begin. It's that simple.

You can look in detail at significant errors, warnings and general notices for the domain, with SEMrush suggesting SEO-boosting fixes for each.

Standout Benefit #2

Spend less time figuring out who your competition is and more time outsmarting them.

With SEMrush, it couldn't be easier to figure out who your closest competitors are, both for SEO and PPC advertising.

But why is this important in the first place? Well, the easiest route to marketing success is to emulate what your competitors are doing right. There's no point trying to learn from a successful website that sits outside of your niche, as the target audience and their behaviors, the most effective/profitable keywords, and the most relevant and authoritative backlink sources will probably be completely different.

Before SEMrush, I used to trawl through Google's results for each of my site's keywords to try and find my closest competitors - a grossly unscientific task. I'd inevitably choose keywords that I thought were a good fit for my niche (they weren't) and that I was ranking well for (I wasn't), and I'd completely miss some of the keywords I should have been targeting.

Thankfully, SEMrush takes away all of the legwork, guesswork, and inaccuracies to give you an accurate list of your closest competitors, giving you more time to focus on what matters - beating them.

Finding Your Site's Competition

After entering a domain (in this case Bodybuilding.com), SEMrush provides a ranked list of organic competitors...

...and paid competitors:

Image showing a list of paid competitors found by the SEMrush digital marketing tool

Standout Benefit #3

Steal your competitors’ marketing secrets by taking a peek under the hood of their websites.

We've all got that one competitor that seems to do everything right.

They showed up late to the party, and yet they're already outranking you and their social media profiles show a torrent of engagement while yours barely show a trickle.

Wouldn't it be great if you could figure out exactly what they're doing better than you? Imagine if you were able to see the 'secret sauce' of their entire operation, that thing that allows them to rank faster than you and eat into your share of traffic.

Well, now you can.

You see, with SEMrush, there's nowhere for your competitors to hide. It allows you to analyze every aspect of your competitors' marketing to help you learn and use their secrets to your advantage.

Consider the playing field well and truly leveled.

Seeing Your Competitors' Marketing Strategies

Here are just a few of the things that you can uncover about your competitors' websites with SEMrush:

  • How much organic traffic a domain receives and an overview of the countries it comes from.

  • The keywords that generate the most organic traffic, including their ranking and monthly search volume.

  • The number of backlinks the domain has.

  • The domain’s main organic competitors.

  • A complete listing of the domain’s backlinks, including the specific anchor text, where it is coming from and whether it is follow/nofollow.

  • How much paid traffic a domain receives and an overview of the countries it comes from.

  • The keywords that generate the most paid traffic, including their ranking and monthly search volume.

  • The number of adverts the domain has listed in Google’s Display Network.

  • The ability to see each of the domain’s paid adverts.

  • The domain’s main paid competitors.

Each of these factors (and more) is shown in the Domain Overview report at the click of a button:

Image showing a domain overview of semrush.com, with this report showing details such as keywords, backlinks, SEMrush competitors, sample ads, etc.
The Domain Overview report is one of the best ways to get the lowdown on your competitors' marketing secrets.

Standout Benefit #4

Stop wasting time and money on unprofitable keywords.

When it comes to SEO success, arguably one of the most critical factors is picking the right keywords.

The search engines' results are too competitive for keywords to merely be an afterthought (or not to be thought about altogether), and you now need a proper keyword strategy to identify search phrases that exhibit relevance and commercial intent, and also those that have a good monthly search volume and a management level of difficulty to make ranking possible.

SEMrush should be the backbone of your keyword strategy, making it easy for you to analyze your competitors' keywords and to find your own profitable keywords.

Seeing Your Competitors' Top Keywords

The Domain Overview report makes it easy to find the keywords that are most valuable to your competitors. You can then choose to add these keywords to your existing content or to create new content around these.

SEMrush also provides a handy indication of a level of overall traffic that these keywords are responsible for, helping you to prioritize which ones you use.

Viewing the full report allows you to see a competitor's top keywords with extra detail such as how much traffic each keyword provides.

Finding Your Own Profitable Keywords

If you'd prefer to find profitable keywords yourself, the SEMrush Keyword Magic tool is a great way to do it.

Once you've entered a phrase, the tool suggests potential keyword variations with details such as monthly search volume, keyword difficulty, and more provided for each.

Standout Benefit #5

Find the best backlink opportunities to boost your website’s authority without wasting time and energy.

It's important to focus on building backlinks as part of your digital marketing strategy to help build your website's reputation as a source of authority and a go-to resource for whatever product, service or content it offers.

You shouldn't be interested in any old backlink, however. Maximum impact will come from gaining high-quality, relevant (to your content) backlinks from authority sites within your niche. The search engines view each backlink from an authority website as a 'seal of approval,' so it's important to target only the best resources in your niche with a continuous campaign to get premium-quality backlinks.

There are a couple of ways that SEMrush speeds up and takes the confusion out of finding the best backlinks.

The first is by allowing you to view a complete list of any domain's backlinks, which will provide you with information such as the link source, the specific anchor text used, and whether or not the link type is follow/nofollow among other things.

The second method, as shown below, allows you to find backlink gaps between your domain and up to four competitors simultaneously.

Seeing Which Backlinks You're Missing

The Backlink Gap report is a great way to see which backlinks you're missing compared to your competitors. It can quickly be sorted by authority score, allowing you to prioritize which sources you'd like to target first in a bid to boost your own website's authority.

You can also click to view your competitors' links in detail, for example, the link type and which anchor text has been used. You can also follow the link to view the source, which will allow you to find similar content on your site that you could ask the source to backlink to, or you could create new content that is similar to your competitor's to gain new backlinks.

You can view each backlink in detail, e.g., the link type, anchor text, and the source and target URLs.

Standout Benefit #6

Relax knowing that your latest content idea will be a hit before you write a single word.

Your website and your brand as a whole will be defined by the content you produce, so it's essential to spend time creating great content.

That's all well and good, and it's a pretty well-understood requirement, but I know from personal experience that it can be tough trying to figure out which type of content is going to resonate most with your audience.

I've spent more than enough time in the past creating in-depth, long-form content that ended up going nowhere, and it can be frustrating wasting time, energy, and money on articles that end up providing little or no benefit. I can think of much more enjoyable ways to spend these resources.

As I mentioned in the introduction though, one of my main issues in the past was creating content I wanted to write, and not material that my audience wanted or needed.

Thankfully, SEMrush's Topic Research tool is one of the best (and easiest) ways for you to avoid making the same mistake.

Finding Popular Content Ideas

The Topic Research tool allows you to be confident that whatever topic you choose will provide maximum value or benefit to your audience before you write even the first word:

Image from the SEMrush review post showing the SEMrush topic research tool in action.
Enter a high-level topic and click Get content ideas to begin. It's that simple.
Image from the SEMrush review post showing the suggested headlines, topics, subtopics and related searches provided by the marketing tool.
The Topic Research dashboard provides you with plenty of ideas for headlines, interesting questions, top subtopics, and related searches.

Standout Benefit #7

Avoid making expensive mistakes by seeing your competitors’ PPC ad text
(find out what works with much less trial, error, and wasted money).

Get it right, and PPC can be an excellent source of traffic to your website, but get it wrong, and it can turn into a costly mistake especially if you're targeting keywords with a high cost-per-click.

It's no secret that platforms like Google AdWords are complicated to learn, and paid advertising campaigns are notoriously difficult to optimize meaning that constant tweaks are needed, for example, targeting different keywords and when ads get shown, etc. Each of these factors can quickly eat into most (or all) of your advertising budget leaving you with little to show for your so-called investment.

What if it didn't have to be so tricky, though? What if could speed up the learning curve to get profitable traffic more quickly from your PPC ads all the while saving money on expensive mistakes? That would be a definite win-win.

Well, this is precisely what SEMrush's Advertising Research tool helps you to do, by showing you every aspect of a competitor's PPC ad campaign which you can then use to your advantage.

Increasing the Profitability of Your PPC Ad Campaigns

The Advertising Research tool uncovers every aspect of a competitor's PPC advertising campaigns, for example, the specific text or images used on each of their adverts, the keywords they're targeting, the cost-per-click for each keyword, and for how long each advert has been running:

Image showing how semrush.com can be used to see the specific ad text from a competitor’s PPC ad campaign.
The Advertising Research tool allows you to see the specific ad text used on each one of a competitor's ads.

You can easily find out which keywords a competitor is targeting for their ads.
Image showing how semrush.com can be used to show how long a competitor has been running a particular PPC advert.
A good indicator of an ad's profitability is how long it has been running for. SEMrush makes it easy to find this out and shows you how the ad text has changed over time.

What Could be Improved?

Nothing is perfect, and SEMrush is no exception.

While I haven't experienced any serious drawbacks, there are a couple of things which I believe could be improved:

  • The User Interface Can Be Confusing at Times

There's no doubting that SEMrush can handle all of my requirements, but it sometimes takes longer than I'd like to complete specific tasks. I put this down to the fact that there are so many tools and functions available that it's a struggle to fit everything on the screen at once, meaning there is a need for various tabs, toggles, and menus to display and hide data at certain times. I think it's unfortunate as some of these things that should help improve the user experience can do the opposite as they're less intuitive than I'd like them to be.

Luckily there is a massive array of documentation available to help, so I've never felt completely stuck, but I feel like some of the functions could be easier to understand in the first place to save the time and effort of looking at the help documentation.

  • The Pricing Could Put Off Independent Operators or Small Businesses

I'm not saying that SEMrush doesn't provide value for money (as it 100% does), but the fact that packages start at $99.95 per month may price out small-scale users such as bloggers, affiliate marketers, or other small business users.

I believe that SEMrush could overcome this by offering a 'Lite' package of sorts, for example, offering reduced functionality versus the Pro plan such as tracking of only one project, crawling of less than 100,000 pages and tracking of fewer than 500 keywords.

SEMrush Pricing & Features

SEMrush offers a free version with limited functionality (you get ten searches per day with a maximum of ten results shown per search, and you can track up to ten keywords and crawl up to 100 pages). These limitations mean that it probably won't be powerful enough for most marketers, but it's a great way to test out the tool before upgrading to a paid plan.

There are four paid plans available for SEMrush, including Pro, Guru, Business and, Enterprise.

(I won't be discussing Enterprise in much detail here, as the price is only available upon request and it'll likely appeal to a tiny minority of users).

Before discussing the differences and pricing of each of the premium packages, it's worth listing the standard functionality that you get regardless of which paid plan you choose:

  • Site Audit
  • On Page SEO Checker
  • Position Tracking
  • Social Media Tracker
  • Social Media Poster
  • Backlink Audit
  • Marketing Calendar
  • Brand Monitoring
  • Post Tracking
  • Content Audit
  • Organic Traffic Insights
  • PPC Keyword Tool
  • Organic Research
  • Keyword Research
  • Keyword Magic Tool
  • Ad Builder
  • Advertising Research
  • Display Advertising
  • Backlinks
  • SEO Content Template
  • Sensor
  • Keyword Difficulty
  • Gap Analysis
  • Traffic Analytics
  • Lead Generation Tool
  • Topic Research
  • My Reports/Notes

The pricing and the high-level features of the three most popular plans are as follows:

Which Plan Is Right for Me?

For Independent Digital Marketers, Affiliate Marketers, Blog Owners, Etc.

My Recommendation - Pro

The Pro plan includes access for 1x user (you can add one additional user for $70/month), and you can add up to five projects which is probably more than enough for most small-scale users.

Pro plan users can also track up to 500 keywords and crawl 100,000 pages per month, but there's no access to historical traffic analytics data which you get from the Guru plan up.

5x PDF reports can be scheduled each month, but you can't customize the look of these, for example, by adding a company logo or name to the report.

SEMrush Free Trial - Get the Pro plan FREE for 7 days (usually $99.95/month)

For Someone Who Runs an SEO Agency or for Small Businesses.

My Recommendation - Guru

There are quite a few reasons why someone would choose the Guru plan over Pro, with the first being that you can add up to 2x additional users per month as opposed to only one, making it a good option for smaller digital marketing teams.

Many of the limitations are reduced too, for example, you get access to historical traffic analytics data going back to 2012, and you can add up to 50 projects, track 1500 keywords and crawl 300 pages - all of which is considerably higher than with the Pro plan.

Another benefit is the fact that you can create branded PDF reports with your company's logo and name, making the Guru plan a good option for users who run and monitor SEO campaigns on behalf of other companies.

For Medium or Large Businesses.

My Recommendation - Business

The Business plan includes standard access for 1x user, but you can add up to nine additional users making it a good option for businesses with larger marketing departments.

Each of the Guru plan's limitations is reduced dramatically, for example, you can now add up to 200 projects, track 5000 keywords and crawl one million pages, which should be more than sufficient for most large-scale users.

You also get complete control over any PDF reports that you generate, for example, not only can you add your company's name or logo as with the Guru plan, but the Business plan also allows you to remove any mention of SEMrush from the report.

If the Business plan proves too restrictive, Enterprise will likely be the best choice. Click here to view more details about the Enterprise plan.

SEMrush Alternatives

Let's face it; there's no shortage of SEO / digital marketing tools available online. To help you make a more informed choice about which to choose, and to add some extra depth to this review, I think it's important to compare a few of the most popular SEMrush competitors to see how they stack up.

The three SEMrush alternatives that I've chosen are Ahrefs, SpyFu, and Moz:

Ahrefs vs SEMrush

Like SEMrush, Ahrefs is an example of a digital marketing tool that helps users grow their search traffic, research their competitors, and stay on top of developments in their niche.

Ahrefs doesn't offer a free plan, and instead lets users trial either the Lite or Standard packages for seven days for $7. The plans are priced as follows:

  • Lite ($99/month)
  • Standard ($179/month)
  • Advanced ($399/month)
  • Agency ($999/month)

The independent review scores for SEMrush vs Ahrefs are as follows (correct at time of writing):

G2 Crowd

Capterra

SpyFu vs SEMrush

Unlike SEMrush and Ahrefs, SpyFu isn't really a complete digital marketing tool.

Instead, it centers around SEO and PPC and allows users to research their competitors' keywords strategies to see what is working and what can be improved. SpyFu can also be used for backlink analysis to help determine which links are assisting other sites to rank.

Unsurprisingly (because of the reduced functionality versus the competition), SpyFu's three plans have lower pricing:

  • Basic ($39/month)
  • Professional ($39/1st month then $78/month)
  • Team ($299/month)

Here are the independent review scores for SEMrush vs SpyFu (correct at time of writing):

G2 Crowd

Capterra

Moz vs SEMrush

Moz Pro is another SEO tool that aims to help users rank their websites by performing a variety of tasks, for example, tracking your current rankings, auditing your sites SEO health and finding new link opportunities.

As with the SEMrush and Ahrefs marketing tools, there are four plans available:

  • Standard ($99/month)
  • Medium ($179/month)
  • Large ($249/month)
  • Premium ($999/month)

Here are the independent review scores for SEMrush vs Moz (correct at time of writing):

G2 Crowd

Capterra

Would I Recommend SEMrush?

Yes, definitely.

Don't just take my word for it though. As the last section shows, it's not only the most widely reviewed of all the marketing tools selected, but it has also received a total of 4.5/5 from 659 independent SEMrush reviews (correct at time of writing) across both the Capterra and G2 Crowd review platforms.

This score is in the ballpark of what I awarded it as part of this review (4.6/5), and it shows an overall very high level of user satisfaction. As a result, SEMrush is an excellent option from the pick of complete digital marketing tools available.

Here are just a few of the benefits which I'll reiterate from earlier:

SEMrush helps you to:

  • Stop second-guessing how your website is performing by giving you a detailed look into your site's SEO health at the click of a button.

  • Spend less time figuring out who your competition is so you can spend more time outsmarting them.

  • Steal your competitors' marketing secrets by letting you take a peek under the hood of their websites.

  • Stop wasting time and money on unprofitable keywords.

  • Relax with the comfort of knowing that your latest content idea will be a hit before you write a single word.

  • Find the best backlink opportunities to boost your website’s authority without wasting time and energy.

  • Avoid expensive PPC advertising mistakes by letting you see your competitors' ad text (to find out what works with much less trial, error, and wasted money).

Start experiencing these benefits for yourself by taking advantage of the following SEMrush free trial (usually $99.95/month):
